A weekend getaway to Rome on a budget might seem unlikely because of the high cost of living in the city. But it’s not hard to save money while in Rome — you just need to employ a few useful tips to enjoy your trip without seeing your wallet empty.
How to get to Rome
if you’re wondering the best way to get to Rome — by train, by car, or by plane — it’s best to catch a flight, as a lot of low cost airlines fly into Rome. Local trains connect Rome’s airports to the center. Otherwise, if you’re already in Italy or arriving from a close country, the train is the cheapest and best way. The main train station, Termini, is set just outside the center and is packed with a lot of cheap hotels. Avoid driving to Rome. Parking cars is very expensive and you will end up wasting time in a traffic jam almost everyday.
Visiting museums for free
Rome is packed with so many museums that you’ll be unlikely to pop into all of them, especially if you’re planning a budget trip. Don’t worry — you can easily get a 50% discount using your Rome Pass Card. Moreover, in late April, around the 20th, in occasion of the Birth of Rome, most of monuments can be visited for free. Try to be in Rome the last weekend of each month as you will get the chance to get to the Vatican Museums for free. Well, you’ll probably be standing on a queue for hours, but the museums are really worth a look. You will not be disappointed and will not regret such a long wait!
Where to sleep?
Which one of the following accommodations should you choose if you’re looking to save money? A Bed and Breakfast, Hotel, Hostel, or apartment? It depends on your budget and on what kind of holiday do you intend to have. Rome actually offers a wide range of property for any kind of tastes and needs, ranging from the most luxurious to the cheapest hotels in Rome, or even small bed and breakfasts run by a local family. Most properties provide special offers almost all year long so that you can more easily get low rates. You’re probably wondering how could you choose from such a great array of options …
First start by choosing the district you want to stay in. I advise you to search hotels near Terrmini station , which include several Bed and Breakfasts, as well as economic hotels. Furthermore, the center can easily be reached either by tube, by bus, or even by walking on Via Nazionale up to Piazza Venezia. Cheap hotels in Rome can be also be found in Testaccio, a popular and thrilling district, not too far from Circo Massimo and popular for its intense nightlife. San Giovanni is another good area to stay on a budget close to the center and the main attractions.
Where to eat?
Save money on accommodation and transport, but please not on food! Enjoy the best of Rome’s restaurants and specialties. Be sure to have dinner at “Da Felice” restaurant in Testaccio and “All’Obitorio” or “La Danesina” in the center. You will not complain about the food! As for ice cream, go to La Palma and San Crispino, both close to the Pantheon.

I actually found Rome to be quite an inexpensive place to travel around because there are so many great sites there to see.

Great article! One important tip I learned (the hard way!) from visiting Rome is that, unlike in America when you can pile 4 people into a hotel room very easily, we were absolutely not allowed to have more than 2 people in our pre-booked hotel. (Apparently it’s done per person over there, and they have limits per room.) Made for crazy last minute scurrying, but we were able to get our friends into a nearby hostel!
